Factors to consider when preparing to install exterior doors.
- Your rough opening should be checked for level, square and plumb.
- Typical exterior door sizes are 6ft. 8in. and 8ft both of which are 3ft. wide.
However this is in name only. The 6ft. 8in. door is actually 2ft. 11-5/8in by 6ft. 7-3/8in.
- If your door has sidelights and a transom be sure your framing carpenter realizes this as the proper
rough framed opening need built to these specs.
- Consider the type of sill being used as this will influence your rough opening.
Some door frames have wood sills that rest on the homes floor joists.
- If you are installing double exterior doors, be aware that the door that
remains stationary will have an astragal molding on its edge. This will
add to the overall width of your rough opening.
